JET III DOT PAINTINGS

JET III's work is a progressive reaction to society and is an effigy to life in general. Built on imagination, experimentation and observation, the work disregards personal style and symbolism by maintaining in endless form, color combinations, transformations manifestations, an efflorescence of artistic precedents and ideals, a kaleidoscope of dissimilar modes of expression and range of endeavor. The work is never complete; it's always in process.

36" x 36" Framed Oil Painting

Stuck: This painting was invented on a trip to Cooperstown, NY where the van we were driving in broke down by the side of the road and we had to sleep and freeze in it overnight, then next morning have it towed, and then fixed. There is a figure fishing into the road and the line is stuck. The road appears as a stream flowing through the Cherry Valley, and the design was performed from just above the river and inside a large water pipe that handles overflow in times of flood, but to many it seems as if the figure is doing something else. It was worked on for a year during 1982 and features a tremendous amount of fine detail. This is one of my best examples from my "Dot Paintings" from that time period. Framed it measures 38" square.
Begun in 1979 as a giant progression, the body or work has evolved into an amazing array or artistic precedents including reversible paintings, convertible sculpture, and hundreds of drawings done on the L.l.R.R., buses and subway trains. The idea of a progression is a modern concept where each painting is a step by step idea process elevating the artist to a higher level and broader spectrum of activities. The "Dot paintings" show interest in reinventing impressionism's ideals and methodology in a modern context. These ideas, the ideas of reversibility and change and the extreme versions of impressionism which carry on the tradition of hatchwork and brushstrokes are re-invented today as a means to present the most detailed and maximum artistic presentations. Where Less is More was the cry of the art movements of some influential artists of the past century, then towards the end of the twentieth century "Less is More or Less" was used by art professors, such as Kaupelis at NYU, to today and the new emergence of JET's maximal style's new motto "More is More".

The process involved in the creation of the body of work has led to many new inventions and returns in cyclical fashion to work that was started at earlier times then evolved into new artworks with compositions based on early ideas. This amazing array of artistic creations include JET's precedents which include reversible paintings, convertible sculpture, modern impressionism, fantasy portraits of famous artists, etc., Maximal Art, Performance Action Paintings and Environmental/Recycled Art.

The Lamp Post

The Lamp Post This is one of my oldest canvases, and was finished in 1982, when I climbed into an old empty fountain in downtown Southampton on Long Island, NY. At this period of time, I was so excited about being an artist and had recently started painting outside (plein air) like the artist heroes I had looked to, from the previous century. In 1982 I lived in East Northport, on Long Island and worked in New York City and I had been painting local beaches in Northport, or driving out farther to the Hamptons with all my art supplies. On several occasions I went out to the Hamptons to paint outside.

When I found this interesting and beautiful "Lamp Post" in the middle of the Southampton Town Park, and located on the other side of the street from the Parrish Art Museum, I had already come up with the idea of painting with the "Dots". The Lamp Post is an original "DOT" painting by JET III is an oil painting on canvas and is 34" x 42" in size and is framed.

The Dream House

This was my grandfather's favorite painting and he took an antique walnut frame and adapted it for it himself. He bought that house in 1945 just after World War II. I updated the frame recently, by painting it white.

The Dream House was finished in 1982, when I painted it from memory. At this period of time, I was so excited about being an artist and had recently started painting outside (plein air) like my artist heroes that I had looked to, from the previous century, but this painting was done in the studio.

I found that I really loved seeing Impressionism and Post Impressionism, but wanted to also invent something really modern and original myself. I thought that some of the ideas from the previous century were just as relevant. This was some of the factors that contributed to how I came up with the idea to paint again with "Dots" in late 1981.

This is one of my "Dot" paintings from 1982 and is a soft dreamlike portrait of an old Federal Era house that goes back to the late 1700's/Early 1800's. I first saw this place as a little baby and saw it over and over a little at a time, throughout my life. Over the years, it has changed somewhat and the house has been modernized as well, but this was painted as I remembered it from my youth. Several large Maple trees have grown up and now cover the front. This oil painting is framed and the canvas measures 30" x 30" square.

Upon inspection up close the "Dream House" has a certain looseness and freedom of brushstrokes that makes it truly wonderful and ahead (or behind) it's time. I painted the "Lamp Post" painting from 1981-1982 and finished it just before applying to NYU for my Masters Degree in Studio Art. I had already come up with the idea of painting with the "Dots". "The Dream House" an original "DOT" painting by JET III is an oil painting on canvas and is 36" x 36" in size and is framed in a white solid walnut wood frame.

Blasted to Atoms

"Blasted to Atoms" was finished in 1982, when I invented it from memory. At this period of time, I was so excited about being an artist and had recently started painting outside (plein air) like my artist heroes that I had looked to, from the previous century, but this painting was done in the studio.

I thought that some of the ideas from the previous century were just as relevant. This is one of my "Dot" paintings from 1982 and is an acrylic on canvas "Dot Series" painting was painted in 1981-82. I feel this painting became a major influence on Ross Bleckner, (my teacher at NYU) when it was displayed in class, along with many of the other "Dot" paintings and the slides of dot paintings that were also shown to him in 1983. He was at that time painting with stripes and he he made his cell paintings later on in the mid 1980's. In this painting you can see the atomic structure, intricate detail and wild color blast and highly charged action. I painted the "Blasted to Atoms" painting from 1981-1982 and finished it just before applying to NYU for my Masters Degree in Studio Art. I had already come up with the idea of painting with the "Dots". "Blasted to Atoms" is an original "DOT" painting by JET III. It is an oil painting on canvas and is 36" x 36" in size, it is currently unframed, but has a painted edge.

Three Trees

"Three Trees" is also from 1982 and features a set of optical trees that appear almost as abstract triangular moonbeams. This is a night landscape, despite the sulfur yellow appearance and the full moon lights up the night to the top right of the scene. The yellow color scheme was something I was investigating at that time and this is the second yellow canvas from that time period. The first canvas was called Two Trees and was sold to Brooke Shields. Three Trees is 36" x 49.5" and has been framed with a fancy gold frame that is 39" x 51.5". "DOT" painting by JET III. It is an acrylic painting on canvas and is 36" x 49.5" in size, it is framed in an antique style gold wood frame.

Joyce

"Joyce" from 1982 features an optical dot woman that appears to radiate charm and friendship from her face, while the hair is set back and has been treated somewhat differently. This is a night portrait with a glowing personality. "DOT" painting by JET III. It is an acrylic painting on canvas and is in the private collection of the subject (See Food).

Man's Best Friends

"This monochromatic blue, finely detailed, psychologically optical, surrealistic oil painting is from 1982-83 and is one of my "Dot" paintings from this time period. In this second, more abstracted and imaginary example of the Waterfall in the Glen, there are some hidden imagery and objects included, as an integral part of it. What you see has a basis in your own imagination and creativity. 30" x 22" in size and 32" x 24" in a hand-made, hand painted frame. It was started plein air in 1982 in Stillwater, NJ at the Waterfall in the Glen at small waterfall behind the Glen Falls Farm. and was later finished in the studio in 1983 "DOT" Man's Best Friends Painting by JET III. It is highly textural and the second more abstract version of an actual waterfall scene.
